Why ice cream is good for you…


Ok, let’s be clear, LOTS of ice cream is not good for you, too much sugar and fat. You can’t eat ice cream all day everyday and be healthy. Sorry. But a little ice cream, especially homemade ice cream, every now and then, as a treat, is uplifting and nourishing. The old adages, ‘A little of what you fancy does you good’ and ‘Everything in moderation’ ring true.


So, if you are going to treat yourself and we all deserve a treat now and then, make your treat a delicious one! Have an ice cream! Ice cream works as a treat on so many levels, instant gratification, that first sweet, creamy taste never fails to hit the spot and then, of course, ice cream is laden with so many feel good memories, associations with hot sunny days, holidays, the beach, family and friends, simple childhood pleasures, stopping in the shade at the park. There is a lot of love and happiness surrounding ice cream. Life without ice cream would be a bit sadder and less fun!


Plus, if you make your own ice cream you’ll know exactly what has gone into it and if you have seen the sugar, weighed it out and mixed it in you might find one scoop is enough! Can’t guarantee that though! Don’t forget you can try reducing the sugar too. Recipes are a guide, a starting point, see them as inspiration and don’t be afraid to alter things or add things to make them your own. Then don’t forget to share them with us!


Homemade ice cream and sorbet will be free of artificial additives, colourings and preservatives which can only be a good thing. You can make a peach sorbet with just four ingredients, peaches, a lemon, water and sugar. A serving of ice cream will provide calcium and if you have used eggs in your ice cream you’ll also get some potassium, vitamin A, D, B12 and riboflavin. Throwing in fruit will also up the vitamin levels and add some fibre. You can also add fresh fruit to your ice cream when you serve it, a handful of raspberries or strawberries work with almost any flavour ice cream and if you add blueberrries you might even boost your brain power!
